GroYourBiz launches in London, UK, with a Canada House extravaganza!

Tasneem Virani is not only the Founder and Director of Claris Coaching, she is also the Managing Director of GroYourBiz in London, and Chair of London’s first MyBusinessMyBoard Advisory Board.

What is GroYourBiz?

GroYourBiz™ was developed for women entrepreneurs who want to take their business to the next level.  Each month entrepreneurs draw upon the skills, expertise, inspiration and energy of like-minded entrepreneurs, offering practical solutions to attracting tomorrow’s customers and expansion needs. GroYourBiz has grown groups of supportive women entrepreneurs all around the world, and Tasneem chairs the new Advisory Board in London.

At Canada House

The GroYourBiz reception took place at Canada House, London on 20th February, and saw over 100 entrepreneurial women come together to celebrate each other. Under a twinkling chandelier, High Commissioner of Canada, HE Mrs Janice Charette likened the vision of GroYourBiz to her own: to create ecosystems allowing businesses to grow. She illustrated how innovation happens when we connect, by telling the story of Clarks, the Welsh company that first got Canadian maple syrup into squeezy bottles – a task that had defeated Canadian producers!

Valuable Advice

HE Janice Charette gave generous and heart-warming advice: do what you love; believe in yourself; remember it’s all about people; and finally, marry well (needless to say, that one was tongue-in-cheek). Her final, valuable message was that a good board is a diverse board. Diversity makes for deeper discussions, and better decisions – certainly an approach that Tasneem has taken as chair of the London Advisory Board.

Feeling Inspired

Barbara Mowat, President and Founder of GroYourBiz Ltd, described how she had supported small businesses all her life, starting at the age of 17 and working with entrepreneurs in 40 countries since then. She inspired with her story of helping the ten members of an Afghan Women’s council to come up with a product in 2003, only for them to grow to ten thousand members by 2013. Don’t go it alone, share you challenges, she said: this is what GroYourBiz is for. As Barbara put it, on a successful advisory board, ‘the secret sauce is the facilitator’, which is where Tasneem comes in…

Chair of the London Board

Tasneem took the stage to talk about the new Advisory Board she’s been chairing in London since October. Its eleven members meet each month, sharing their challenges and advice from their experiences as entrepreneurs. Tasneem shared her own personal experiences as an entrepreneur and identified the type of support she would have liked. This resonated well with the structure of GroYourBiz, as the peer advisory board facilitates accountability and provides trusting advisors to support a clear business direction. Later she introduced three of the board members; they described how their businesses had grown even in their first few months on the board, and how useful it was to have a framework to work within, helping them to focus and evaluate their progress. They also took the time to praise Tasneem's generosity, respect and care.

Introducing the "Claris Coaching Academy"

Claris Coaching launches the “Claris Coaching Academy.” It’s a pioneering business tool specifically focused on helping small businesses accelerate all aspects of their enterprise.

Here’s how it works:

Through a series of practical exercises, we help you diagnose your own business marketing strategy, then offer courses and tips to bring about a perfect execution.

Do you relate to any of these predicaments?

"The most expensive and difficult function of my business is acquiring new customers."

The reason it's difficult has nothing to do with you, your business or your marketing. It has to do with the growth of the Internet and the tremendous number of scams and charlatans that lurk online offering every bogus product and service you can imagine.

Claris Coaching Academy provides you with a methodology to gain more leads.

"I am looking for ways for my customers to purchase more often."

If you have a business that has current customers, then you already have a relationship established with them. You have already invested substantial time and resources to attract and keep them as customers.

Acquiring new customers is both difficult and expensive. But getting your customers to purchase more often is incredibly easy and costs virtually nothing to do… when you know, understand and apply the right strategies in the right situations.

Claris Coaching Academy provides you with a methodology to acquire more transactions.

"I would like to sell more of my products or services without increasing my traffic?"

Sometimes even seemingly tiny changes — the headline colour or the words you use on your buy button — can instantly double your sales.

Claris Coaching Academy provides you with a methodology towards more conversion opportunities.

"I spend countless hours attempting to generate leads, attract new clients and increase revenues and profits… but see very little in the way of results?"

Coaching is NEVER an expense. It's one of the smartest investments any small business owner will ever make when it comes to building a successful business.

Claris Coaching Academy provides you with one on one coaching.

Ready to give it a try?

Claris Coaching launches a new service: family business

“My father was a very successful entrepreneur in Nairobi, along with his 2 brothers. They worked very closely together. Then trouble started when the 2nd generation came into the business. They were issues around the way they were communicating, and around their roles in the business. Instead of valuing each person’s contribution into the business, and having family discussions around long term strategy, they were so easily influenced by those ‘friends,’ even their children and their spouses; all of whom had their own agenda. I look back and think if they had the tools today and the knowledge, the family business would have excelled into the 4th generation, more united and with less suffering.” - Tasneem Virani, Founder Claris Coaching.

Based on Tasneem’s personal experience in the family, Claris Coaching has been built on a very strong premise to facilitate family business growth. We are passionate about helping businesses become more sustainable and move smoothly into the 3rd, even 4th generation. Building blocks need to be in place right at the start of the 2nd generation.

Here's how we do it:

We’ve identified common roadblocks:

• Missing information
• Lack of communication
• No real clarity around best practices
• No confidence that they are making sound decisions
• Could be “family first”

We’ve also identified areas of growth:

• There is some level of confidence that a solid family / personal connection exists
• The family has the potential to learn and work together to implement best practices in the ownership and business circles

So how do we guide you?

Our new service section – Family Business – is filled with the latest tools and techniques proven to grow your family business.

It includes our recent partnership with the Family Firm Institute – a pioneering global network of thought-leaders in the field of family enterprise which provides research-based learning and relevant tools to practitioners worldwide.

It also includes our new collaboration with the BDO International Family Business Group and © The BDO SuccessCare Program. They recently launched the results of the first phase of their global study on family business: the Discovery Questionnaire. Among other findings, it reveals that communication and long term strategy are the major blocks across family businesses worldwide.

To explore the types of roadblocks that could be impacting the success of your family business, Claris Coaching now provides a complimentary test drive of the Discovery Questionnaire. It's a benchmark tool for your business and it's available to you today.

Claris Coaching will not only help you to open up the lines of communication and set structures in place, but will also identify the right experts to address your specific needs and concerns.

After an initial consultation with us, we assess your individual case and put you directly in touch with © The BDO SuccessCare Program for a more thorough analysis, including their 13 factor test for success and continuity. .

The golden thread shaping skills for the future: Emotional Intelligence

Our last blog post highlighted the top 10 predicted skills needed for 2020, according to the World Economic Forum report of 2016. What we noticed is fascinating:

Despite the continuance of technological breakthroughs, human qualities, not machines, will begin to navigate our skill sets in the future, with creativity and critical thinking topping the list.

While it’s true that technology has enhanced some of our work processes, robots aren’t exactly as creative as humans, are they?

The avalanche of new products and new technologies brings the opportunity to invent new ways of working. So, we are going to have to become more creative in order to benefit from all that technology.

The difference is being human.

What will be essential in all categories is to master one golden thread of psychology: “emotional intelligence."

According to internationally known psychologist Daniel Goldman, “Having emotional intelligence is developing oneself and being able to carry on even is there are frustrations. To be able to control our impulses and regulate our moods so that the distress one feels does not cloud one’s ability to think. To be able to recognize how another person feels and thinks and see situations from other perspectives.”

Emotional intelligence, simply put, applies to everything: problem solving, negotiation, service orientation, judgment, decision making, creativity, people management, coordinating with others and having cognitive flexibility.

It is not just for leaders and managers. It is also for organisations to become more complex operating system.

At Claris Coaching, we offer a range of packages for mastering the craft of emotional intelligence:

One of the featured tools: the Six Seconds Emotional Intelligence assessment:

By activating the Six Seconds Emotional Intelligence tool, we guide you to achieving the following results:

  • Measure your emotional intelligence.
  • Put emotional intelligence into action.
  • Learn what “being smarter with feelings” means.
  • Explore the approach “know yourself, choose yourself, give yourself."
  • Make connections with neuroscience and mindfulness practice.

Knowing others is intelligence, knowing yourself is true wisdom. Mastering others is strength, mastering yourself is power. “
— Laozi

A new study examined over 75,000 individuals (primarily managers and employees from over 15 workplace sectors) from 126 countries.

As shown in the graph below, there is an extremely strong, positive relationship between emotional intelligence test scores and success scores.
For more information on this study, click here.

When we are triggered, we move into fight, flight, freeze or even apease response. We cannot think straight as we have just released cortisol that is the body’s mechanism to protect. This impacts decision making, the way we problem solve, and the way we create. It happens due to the way we react with different parts of the brain. Our body, mind and spirit needs mastery in working together. Having emotional intelligence provides the bridge that allows the brain to be most effective.

Master your workforce strategy by 2020

Did you know that five years from now, over one-third of skills that are considered important in today’s workforce will have changed? And that by 2020, we would have entered the “Fourth Industrial Revolution?”

The World Economic Forum recently presented an astonishing look at what’s in store for us in the next 5 years, specifically highlighting the top 10 skills necessary to trump our workforce strategy by 2020. On the list are critical thinking, people management, and our favourite, emotional intelligence.

At Claris Coaching, we’ve already started mapping out the future of jobs and have tailored some services to get those skills in tip-top shape.

First it’s about scouting the right employee for the job, and then it's about cultivating and fine-tuning their potential.

Sounds like recruiting doesn’t it?

It is.

Amongst Claris' toolkit of tricks, we have plucked out the most effectively proven recruitment tool in the industry. Certified Birkman experts, this razor sharp technique lies at the centre of our practice.

In our next issue, we will tackle another one on the Workforce 2020 and one of our key offerings: Emotional Intelligence.

When we understand our stress behaviours, we start to think and navigate through our emotions whilst building emotional intelligence.
— Tasneem Virani, founder Claris Coaching

It’s the end of the year, and the pressure is on....

We’re expected to map out all sorts of new goals, to accelerate our benchmarks and, most importantly, to craft new visions.

But what if our vision is blurry? Or we just don’t know where to start: from ideas to manifestations?

Here’s a suggestion: How about a vision board?

Sure, it’s one of the oldest techniques in the book. Depending on how you approach it, it can also be one of the most powerful tools of visualization.

Introducing 3 approaches to vision boards:

A vision board is a great way to align our purpose, values and emotions.

Research now shows that it is a great methodology to release dopamine in the brain - that neurotransmitter that creates signals between the brain cells. For example, when something good or unexpected happens, dopamine helps you feel motivated.

The key then is not only to stimulate dopamine in the brain through visualisation, but to use that to set goals.

Recently, Claris Coaching has gained more knowledge about the role of the reticular cortex and the reticular activating system (RAS) - the part of the brain that helps us focus. As we stimulate this part of the brain with our vision and emotions, it then becomes a scanner, sourcing what we are most attracted to.

In case you're new to vision boards, here is the drill:

1) Go through your magazines and tear the images that grab your interest. Words, images, headlines, anything that strike your fancy.

2) Then it’s time to eliminate and consolidate. Add some writing to mark your ideas clearly.

3) And there you have it.

The trick is to find the vision board approach that suits you.

New York Times bestseller and coaching Jack Canfield has nailed down 3 approaches to vision boarding, which we think are just brilliant.

1. "You know what you want" vision board:

– You’re very clear about your desires.
– You want to change your environment or surroundings.
– There is a specific thing you want to manifest in your life. (i.e. a new home, or starting a business)

– Look for the exact pictures which portray your vision.

2. "The opening and allowing: vision board:

– You’re not sure what exactly you want.
– You have a vision of what you want, but are uncertain about it in some way.
– You know you want change, but don’t know.

– Go through each magazine. Tear out images that delight you. Don’t ask why. Then, as you start to eliminate, hold that same openness, but ask yourself what your picture might mean. What is the picture telling you about you?

3. "The theme" vision board:

– It’s your birthday or New Years Eve or some significant event that starts a new cycle.
– You are working with one particular area of your life. Ex: work & career.

– This one has clear parameters and intent. Before you begin the vision board, take a moment to hold the intent and the theme in mind. When you choose pictures, they will be in alignment with the theme.

Give vision boards a try! It's proven to sharpen your focus through activating your subconscious, the laws of attraction as well as building internal motivation.

At Claris Coaching, we've done our very own vision board, crafting out new horizons for 2016. These include an elearning marketing suite to help small businesses grow, and some sharp new tools specifically for sustainability in family business.

From all of us at Claris Coaching, we would like to wish you a wonderful holiday season, and a 2016 full of sparkling new visions, focus and light.

Tricks of the trade: a first hand experience of Claris' bag of tricks:

Meet Kamila Borkowska; General Manager of the Comfort Inn Westminster.

3 years ago, she - along with several other managers in her company - were initiated into Claris’ bag of tricks: a rigorous leadership and development training program implemented by Claris Coaching, specifically for managers. Included on the agenda was The Birkman Method, leadership and management competencies, and emotional intelligence power sessions.

Kamila shares her insights into the process.

CC: How did The Birkman impact you?

KB: "Firstly, I’ve really enjoyed having my Birkman profile explained. It is a powerful tool and it helped me to see my unique points, strengths and to clearly understand the areas of development I had at the time.

When I became a GM, I had overloaded myself but once I was shown my strengths and weaknesses, I learnt how to handle my stress."

CC: What exactly happened in your training sessions that included developing emotional intelligence?

KB: "The sessions focused on understanding my own emotions, where they come from and why they feel the way they do. The next part was about how to move away from negative emotions. This year I took the SEI test and was introduced to the competencies related to the Six Seconds Model.

CC: Why was this important in your work role?

KB: "As managers we deal with lots of different people and different situations. For example, when motivating the team, it’s important to understand others and try to find ways to connect and develop relationships. If you understand people, they understand you, which actually is what creates this relationship. Motivating them then becomes easier."

CC: What has been the overall outcome of that session for you?

KB: "Now I can understand different points of view and I try not to judge. If someone has a negative approach, it doesn’t necessarily mean they are a negative person. It’s important to deal with the problem objectively. Especially in the hospitality environment, people do tend to complain. However, through having emotional intelligence we can handle these customers in an appropriate and a positive way which is better for business and morale within the team."

CC: Is there more to the process?

KB: "I continue to take Management Team Coaching sessions and am working towards my CMI Level 5 Certificate in Management. Claris’ founder, Tasneem, knows us all - our strengths and development points. She helped us to become stronger, and to believe in ourselves, changing negative approaches. She has also helped us to create a strategy, strengthen the structure in the organisation and to create procedures."

CC: And now, 3 years later, how do you feel about your role as manager and your organisation in general?

KB: "We are stronger and more aware. We actually believe in ourselves and achieve more. We are more aware of what our staff want, we are stronger in emotional intelligence – so we are better in teamwork, in maintaining customer standards, and focusing on what is important in the business.  We understand what leaders and what managers need and how to create a successful organisation. We know we need to start from the team/employees. Creating a family that cares for each other, support each other.

I love it.

We have also created an orientation manual and various documentations from a HR point of view. We do appraisals on a yearly basis now; we catch up consistently every 6 months.

We have a happy environment for the team members – they want to stay with the hotel, they wish to grow. We are much more open, creative, stronger, knowledgeable and able to move forward."

CC: Thanks Kamila!
