The golden thread shaping skills for the future: Emotional Intelligence

Our last blog post highlighted the top 10 predicted skills needed for 2020, according to the World Economic Forum report of 2016. What we noticed is fascinating:

 

Despite the continuance of technological breakthroughs, human qualities, not machines, will begin to navigate our skill sets in the future, with creativity and critical thinking topping the list.

While it’s true that technology has enhanced some of our work processes, robots aren’t exactly as creative as humans, are they?

The avalanche of new products and new technologies brings the opportunity to invent new ways of working. So, we are going to have to become more creative in order to benefit from all that technology.
 

 

The difference is being human.

 

 

What will be essential in all categories is to master one golden thread of psychology: “emotional intelligence."

According to internationally known psychologist Daniel Goldman, “Having emotional intelligence is developing oneself and being able to carry on even is there are frustrations. To be able to control our impulses and regulate our moods so that the distress one feels does not cloud one’s ability to think. To be able to recognize how another person feels and thinks and see situations from other perspectives.” 

Emotional intelligence, simply put, applies to everything: problem solving, negotiation, service orientation, judgment, decision making, creativity, people management, coordinating with others and having cognitive flexibility.

It is not just for leaders and managers. It is also for organisations to become more complex operating system.

A new study examined over 75,000 individuals (primarily managers and employees from over 15 workplace sectors) from 126 countries.

As shown in the graph below, there is an extremely strong, positive relationship between emotional intelligence test scores and success scores.

When we are triggered, we move into fight, flight, freeze or even apease response. We cannot think straight as we have just released cortisol that is the body’s mechanism to protect.
